- Description
Dimetridazole is a nitroimidazole which is bactercicidal to most obligate anaerobic bacteria.it has negligible activity against aerobic bacteria. It is active against serpulina hyodysenteriae (Treponema hyodysenteriae)&a variety of protozoa..Acquired resistance among susceptible organisms is rare .It lead to cell death , through reduction of the nitro group- after entry into the cell – to produce a variety of unstable intermediates ,including antibacterial products. Reduction occurs under anaerobic conditions but unlike that of the nitrofurans,is not enzymatically controlled. The unstable intermediates interact with bacterial or protozoal DNA, damaging the helical structure & causing strand breakage.leads to inhibition of nucleic acid synthesis &inhibition of the DNA repair enzyme DNAase I .
