Vaxflagy

  • composition
  • Each 100 gm contains:

    Metronidazole                           20 gm

    Amoxicillin(as trihydrate)      10    gm

  • properties
  •   Vaxflagy  is a combined antibacterials containing amoxicillin and metronidazole.

Amoxicillin is a beta-lactam antibiotic and its structure contains the beta-lactam ring

and thiazolidine ring common to all penicillins. It prevents the bacterial cell wall

from forming by interfering with the final stage of peptidoglycan synthesis. It

inhibits the activity of transpeptidase enzymes which catalyse cross linkage of the

glycopeptides polymer units that form the cell wall.It exerts a bactericidal action but

causes lysis of growing cells only. It can be referred to as a time dependent

antibiotic. It is active against some Gram negative bacteria and most Gram positive

bacteria as Penicillin sensitive pasteurella spp., Proteus spp., Streptococcus spp.,

E.coli and Gram positive cocci. Metronidazole is a concentration dependent

bactericidal agent against susceptible bacteria. Its exact mechanism of action is taken

up by anaerobic organisms where it is reduced to an unidentified polar compound. It

is believed that this compound is responsible for the drug’s antimicrobial activity by

disrupting DNA and nucleic acid synthesis in the bacteria. It has activity against

most obligate anaerobes including Bacteroides spp. (including B. fragilis),

Fusobacterium veillonella, Clostridium spp., Peptococcus spp.and Peptostreptococcus

spp. Actinomyces is frequently resistant to metronidazole. Some  isolates of C.difficile

may be resistant. Metronidazole is is also trichomonacidal and amebicidal in action and

acts as a direct amebicide. It has therapeutic activity against Entamoeba histolytica,

Trichomonas spp., Giardia spp. and Balantidium coli. It acts primarily against the

trophozoite forms of Entamoeba rather than encysted forms.

  • target species
  • Poultry – Dogs – Cats.
  • indications
  •   For the treatment of:

    • Giardiosis caused by Giardia duodenalis.
    • Rhinitis caused by Pasteurella spp. and Streptococcus spp.
    •  Bronchopneumonia caused by Pasteurella spp., Escherichia coli and Gram-

    positive cocci.

    • Pyelonephritis and infections of the lower urinary tract caused by Escherichia coli,

    Proteus spp. and Gram-positive cocci.

    • Endometritis caused by Escherichia coli, Streptococcus canis and Proteus  spp.
    • Local skin infections caused by Streptococcus spp.
  • dosage
  • Route of administration: Taken orally via drinking water

For whole product: 1 gm of product / 10 kg b.wt . twice daily for a minimum of 5 consecutive days . the majority of routine cases respond after between 5 and 7 days of therapy . if no improvement is observed after 5- 7 days, the diagnosis should be re-assessed . in chronic or refractory cases .a longer course of therapy may be required.

  • warning
    • If the drug must be used in animals with significant liver impairment, consider reducing the total daily  dose to 1/3 of standard anti-anaerobe dosage and dose once daily.
    • Because of the risk for neurotoxicity in dogs, total daily doses of metronidazole should not exceed 65 mg / kg per day.
    • In animals with hepatic and renal dysfunction, the dosing regimen should be carefully evaluated and the use of the product based on a risk/benefit evaluation by the veterinary surgeon.
    • the product should only be used based on susceptibility testing.
  • contra indications
    • Do not use in case of hypersensitivity to penicillins or other substances of the β- lactam group.
    • Do not use in case of hypersensitivity to metronidazole or other nitroimidazole  derivatives
    • Do not use in case of severly debilitated, pregnant or nursing animals.
    • Do not use in animals with  hepatic dysfunction.
  • side effects
    • Neurologic disorders, lethargy, weakness, neutropenia, hepatotoxicity, hematuria, anorexia, nausea, vomiting & diarrhea.
    • Allergic skin reactions & anaphylaxis.
  • withdrawal time
    • Not applicable.
  • storage condition
  • Store at a temperature not exceeding  30°C in a dry place, used immediately after opening and reconstitution

  • package
  • HDPE opaque plastic jar contains: LDPE colorless plastic bag contains

500 gm powder and tightened with LDPE white plastic seal strip, the jar covered by HDPE opaque plastic cap with HDPE safety seal with outer label only.
