Vetcarestine

  • composition
  • Each 1 ml contains:

Colistin sulphate       240 mg  (eq. to  5,760,000   IU)

  • properties
  • Colistin is a polypeptide antibiotic belonging to the class of polymyxin.

Colistin has a bactericidal action on sensitive bacterial strains , by disorganization of their cytoplasmic membrane , leading to an alternation of cell permeability and thus to a loss of intracellular material

Colistin has bactericidal power against a broad spectrum of Gram-negative bacteria , including enterobacteria and in particular Escherichia  coli , Colistin has a very little activity against Gram-Positive bacteria and fungal organisms .

Gram-Positive bacteria , as well as some species of Gram-negative bacteria such as proteus and Serratia , are naturally resistant to colistin

However, the acquisition of resistance of gram- negative enteric bacteria to colistin is rare and can be explained by simple mutation.

Colistin exhibits concentration-dependent activity against Gram-negative bacteria .Following oral administration, high concentrations are observed in the gastrointestinal tract . i.e., the target site due to the low absorption of the substance.

Colistin is a polymyxine bactericidal polypeptide antibiotic. It produces its antibacterial effect by interacting strongly with phospholipids in bacterial cell membrane & radically disturbed their permeability & function. Colistin is active against G -ve bacteria such as Pseudomonas , E. coli ,Klebsiella , Aerobacter , Enterobacter , Salmonella , Shigella & Haemophilus.

  • target species
  • broiler chickens.
  • indications
  • It is used for the treatment of gastrointestinal tract infections caused by G – ve Colistin sensitive bacteria (ex: E.coli).

  • dosage
  • Route of administration: taken  Orally Via drinking water.

    • For Whole product :
    1. B) broiler Chickens:13 ml of product / 1000 kg.b.wt.in drinking water daily for 3-7 days(1.3 ml\10 liter))

Duration of treatment should be limited to the minimum time necessary for the treatment of the disease.

Treatment duration should not exceed 7 days.

  • warning
  • Special warnings for each target species:

Colistin exerts concentration- dependent activity against Gram-negative bacteria. Following oral administration high concentration are achieved in gastrointestinal tract , i.e. the target site , due to the poor absorption of the substance . these factors indicate that a longer duration of treatment than the one indicated In dosage section leading to unnecessary exposure is not recommended

Special precautions for use in animals:

-Do not use colistin as a substitute for good management practices .

-Colistin is a last resort drug in human medicine for treatment of infectious caused by certain multi-drug resistant bacteria . In order to minimize any potential risk associated with widespread use of colistin . its use should be limited to treatment or treatment and metaphylaxis of disease , and should not be used for prophylaxis

-Whenever possible. colistin should only be used based on susceptibility testing .

-Use of the product deviating from the instructions given in the insert may lead to treatment failures and increase the prevalence of bacteria resistant to colistin

  • contra indications
  • Do not use in horses, particularly in foals, since colistin, due to a shift in the gastrointestinal micro flora balance could lead to the development of antimicrobial associated colitis (Colitis X), typically associated with Clostridium difficile, which may be fatal.

  • withdrawal time
  • pigs : meat and offal : 2 days

    broiler chicken:

    Meat and offal: 1 day.

    Eggs: zero days.

  • storage condition
    • Store at temperature not exceeding 30◦C  and used immediately after opening.
  • package
    • 250 ml oral solution in opaque plastic HDPE container sealed with aluminium seal lined inside by HDPE plastic film closed by opaque plastic HDPE cap with outer label
